The Algerians drew with the Russians in what was to be a decider on who would qualify in second place from a group that had Belgium in it, leading the pack.

Ex-England boss Fabio Capello saw his Russian side take an early lead when an unmarked Aleksandr Kokorin headed in from Kombarov’s cross.

Russia would have needed all three points to keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 and they started well enough, it was possible they could defend until the very last minute and get themselves a 1-0 victory.

It wasn’t to be that way as  in the 60th minute Islam Slimani converted from Yacine Brahimi’s free kick and made it 1-1.

The Russians would need another goal and to win 2-1 to get them all three points and qualify but it never happened. There would be no more goals in this game and Algeria would get their second place group spot, making it to the last 16 with Belgium from their group. Algeria will now face Germany on the route to the Quarter Finals.

KEY PLAYERS:  Aleksandr Kokorin would be the guy who got the Russians only goal of the game.

The Algerians will have been praising Islam Slimani when he headed in the equalizer and got the goal that helped their country qualify and continue in this tournament. Algeria become the sixth different African team to get to compete in the knockout stages of a World Cup, as did Morocco, Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana in previous World Cups.

I’m an Englishman (born and raised in Liverpool in the 80s). My whole family including my parents and grandparents were Liverpool fans so I was born into being a red. I’ve seen Liverpool win the league (about 25 years ago) and I’ve been 100% loyal and committed while supporting the Reds through all the good times AND the bad times since the 80s.

I’m a die hard Liverpool fan (only supported ONE club in my whole life, Liverpool) and one of the most dedicated fans you’ll ever meet.
