ANFIELD FAMILY LIVERPOOL FAN OF THE WEEK: FRAN – CHILE
Anfield Family’s Liverpool fan of the week is a platform exclusively for Liverpool FC fans from different corners of the world to express themselves. As part of our South America Fan Feature Series for the whole of December, our search for another passionate Red takes us to Chile again. This week, our fan of the week is Fran, who is a South American supporter with Scouser blood, literally! So, let’s hear more from her.
Address: Talcahuano, Chile
Occupation: Law Student
Interests: Reading, singing, swimming, dancing, Mario kart, Pokemon and going out with friends
1. How long has it been since you supported Liverpool FC?
10 years now. Man, I felt old just by typing that!
2. How did you become a Liverpool fan?
I took an interest in football when I was around 11. I started watching the Champions League, and that eventually led me to the Premiership. Most of my male classmates were Man U or Chelsea fans (Man U won the ’06-’07 season, Chelsea had won the season before and apparently no one remembered Istanbul) and I decided to support Liverpool because my great grandparents were Scousers and I really liked the Beatles. Not the best reasoning, I know, but I was just getting into football and that seemed enough at the time. As years went by I fell in love with the team’s passion and relentless pursuit of victory, and, being from an industrial harbour town, just like Liverpool, I began to feel a connection with the city itself.
3. Who is your favorite Liverpool legend and why?
This is probably the standard answer for people my age, but I gotta go with Stevie G. We’ve all seen him give his all for the club, even at the worst of times, and that’s something you don’t see too often in a player these days.
I greatly admire Bill Shankly as well, for turning the club into what it was in the sixties/seventies, and because he was a socialist, which I think is pretty awesome.
4. Who is your current favorite player in the team?
I really enjoy seeing Coutinho on the field, and I absolutely love what Sturridge does when he’s not injured.
5. Which one player do you suggest the Liverpool board to buy and why?
A fellow countryman already suggested Gary Medel last week, and it might sound biased, but he embodies everything this club stands for, and he is one hell of a defender!
6. Given the chance to watch Liverpool play at Anfield, which opponent would you choose and why?
Everton. Say what you will about the rivalry with Man U, but Liverpool-Everton is THE derby to watch.
7. Can you recall the most memorable Liverpool FC match that you watched live?
It was the winter of 2011. I was staying in France for the holidays, Fernando Torres had just left for Chelsea a month ago and I was freezing and absolutely crushed. Most of us were sad or angry, I imagine, but I was a 16-year-old schoolgirl at the time and I had had a huge crush on Torres since I was 12 or 13. His departure felt like a kind of personal betrayal. Then came the news that he would debut against Liverpool, and a lone thought plagued my mind: revenge. The rest is history, of course. Torres ran around looking dumbfounded for the whole match, Meireles scored a single-but oh-so-satisfying-goal with the aid of the ever selfless Dirk Kuyt, and Daniel Agger-sweet, dearest Daniel Agger- hit Torres right in his stupid face. We won, I was vindicated, and everything was right in the world again. Balance had been brought to The Force. The picture of Agger hitting Torres was my cellphone’s wallpaper for a whole year.
8. Your favorite Liverpool goal?
Coutinho’s goal against Man City from March last year was a thing of beauty.
9. What’s your expectation for Liverpool for the current season?
I hope we can win, but I’ll be happy if we finish in the top four.
10. What’s the most memorable thing that you have done as a Liverpool fan?
I hope to actually go see a match in Anfield some day, and count that as the most memorable thing I’ve ever done.
11. Your message to other Liverpool fans.
Hey everyone! 😀
These last few weeks have not been that easy and consistency is still an issue for the team. But I think Klopp has more than proven that he can get the best out of every player and out of the team as a whole, so we should all keep having faith: this might be the year we finally win another title <3 .
