Chile were supposed to be the “weakest side” in Australia’s group. I do not think even the Chileans would have predicted this game would go the way it did!

It was only 12 minutes into the game before Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez proved what he can do by scoring the 1st goal of the game. Then only two minutes later while the Aussies were still shaken up by Sanchez’s goal, Valdivia decided to make it 2-0.

Australia looked shocked but did not give up and before the end of the 1st half, Tim Cahill had made sure Australia would not lie down and die just yet as he scored the first goal for Australia of the tournament. It would stay at 2-1 for most of the game however! And despite Australia making grand efforts to get an equalizer, the referee would book at least three Australians and perhaps being cautious to not get second yellows made the job even harder.

Almost at the final whistle another goal would be scored, but it was not to be Australia’s day as Beausejour made it 3-1 and there would be no points for the Aussies.

KEY PLAYERS: Alexis Sanchez looks like he can prove himself internationally after having success at club level with Barcelona.

Tim Cahill was the powerhouse who headed home after being delivered a beautiful cross. If Australia’s midfielders can keep up delivering enough balls like that one today to the ex-Everton forward, I think he can get more goals in this tournament.
