COSTA RICA 0 – 0 ENGLAND

England got their only point of the tournament in a goalless draw which Costa Rica didn’t seem to care about after already qualifying for the last 16.

Roy Hodgson’s already down and out side played like they had nothing to gain from it, which is technically true since they will not progress from the group stages.

Hodgson gave Frank Lampard the captain’s armband and Steven Gerrard was a late substitute as the veteran pair played out what may be their final England appearances in an England shirt with both players rumoured to be considering retirement from international football.

Joe Foster would be England’s goalkeeper in their final group stage match and pulled off some fine saves to deny Costa Rica a single goal.

I have been particularly impressed with only Liverpool players in this World Cup (Sturridge, Sterling, Gerrard, Henderson and Johnson have played quite well despite never winning and not qualifying for the last knockout stages) as watching England increasingly became quite frustrating, especially when Wayne Rooney squandered chances again and again and again, even in games we desperately need to get all 3 points in, the importance of the World Cup seemed lost on him as Rooney played like it was nothing but a few friendlies he was chosen to play in.

Hodgson seemed clueless in how Rooney should fit in to the side as Sturridge and Sterling being an attacking partnership seemed to blow Roy’s mind and he could not conceive an attack plan which did not include the Manchester United striker who is in my opinion, massively overrated. As an England fan, I now wish to see our next manager chosen and to get Hodgson out as quickly as possible. He doesn’t have the necessary conviction to put together a team that is “experimental” (does not use Rooney and uses better suited midfielders rather than choosing Rooney to play in midfield behind the other strikers). England need someone as brave as the Three Lions on our chest to manage us in the future.

KEY PLAYERS: Joel Campbell was a part of most of the Costa Rican’s attacks.

Daniel Sturridge would have England’s best chances although never actually managing to score any of them.

I’m an Englishman (born and raised in Liverpool in the 80s). My whole family including my parents and grandparents were Liverpool fans so I was born into being a red. I’ve seen Liverpool win the league (about 25 years ago) and I’ve been 100% loyal and committed while supporting the Reds through all the good times AND the bad times since the 80s.

I’m a die hard Liverpool fan (only supported ONE club in my whole life, Liverpool) and one of the most dedicated fans you’ll ever meet.
