FA CUP FOURTH ROUND REPLAY: BOLTON 1-2 LIVERPOOL
Liverpool are suddenly starting to look like the team that almost won the league last year. We certainly cannot deny that lately the team is looking much more confident and last night’s result at the Macron Stadium only justifies this fact. Courtesy of a couple of magical strikes towards the dying minutes of the game by Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho Liverpool are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Like the past few weeks, manager Brendan Rodgers decided to opt for a stronger midfield than a threatening attack system. Steven Gerrard was also named in the squad which meant that it was the legend’s 700th appearance as a Liverpool player. He had even tweeted a picture of him with a shoe specially made for the occasion before the game. Cheers Captain Fantastic!
The first half had some moments of action, with Liverpool definitely looking like the stronger side. Liverpool were unlucky not to take the lead in the first half, as they hit the woodwork a couple of times. It looked like Liverpool fans would have to witness an unlucky game. Bolton did make some good moves but they too couldn’t manage anything in the first half. So both the sides were goalless in the first half.
When the second half started Liverpool still looked strong, yet against the momentum, Bolton took the lead in the 59th minute through a penalty. Martin Skrtel fouled Bolton’s Zach Clough just inside the penalty box and the referee awarded a direct penalty, through which Eidur Gudjohnsen easily scored past Simon Mignolet.
Liverpool kept on pressing but failed to get a goal. However, the action would change dramatically after the 65th minute when Bolton’s Neil Danns would receive a second yellow card for his foul and Bolton were down to ten men. Liverpool capitalized after nearly 21 minutes with the 1-man advantage as a brilliant lob from Emre Can directly found Raheem Sterling who put the ball inside the net and now the score was 1-1.
Liverpool fans got even more reasons to celebrate a few moment later as Philippe Coutinho’s attempt from outside the box tricked Bolton’s keeper hit the post and touched the net. That brilliant goal ensured that Liverpool would come out as winners.
Liverpool will now face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fifth round. If such performances continue, there is no doubt that we will go a long way. WALK ON, WALK ON!
