FIRMINO ‘AGREES TO SIGN’ FOR LIVERPOOL
The 23-year old Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino is set to become Liverpool’s fifth signing of the season, after a deal was agreed with his current club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. At £29 million, Firmino is set to become the second most expensive signing in the history of Liverpool FC. It’s also been expected that the deal has cleared the way for the departure of Raheem Sterling from Anfield.
Firmino is regarded as a versatile player, who can fill different roles in the field, including as a center forward and an attacking midfielder. However, the player has been renowned for his ability to switch to defensive mode, when needed. Firmino had been on the radar of several top clubs in Europe after the 2013-14 season, where he became the fourth highest goal-scorer in the German Bundesliga, finding the net 21 times for Hoffenheim in the season.
Currently, Firmino is representing Brazil at the 2015 Copa America in Chile. Liverpool’s chief executive Ian Ayre is reported to be heading towards Chile to finalize the deal.
Firmino scored the winning goal for Brazil in the final group match against Venezuela, which also ensured the progress of the Sambas to the next round, aided by the current Reds star Philippe Coutinho. After the dismissal of star striker Neymar from the tournament, the duo now has the added responsibility at the front for Brazil. Liverpool fans will expect the duo to be even more lethal against opposition defenses next season.
