PORTUGAL 2 – 1 GHANA
Portugal would win their game against Ghana but would not qualify for the last 16 as Germany and USA got the top two spots needed to progress to the knockout stages.
Equal on points (4 points) with the Americans, a simple matter of goal difference decided that Portugal would not be qualifying. America would eventually have a goal difference of ZERO (0) once the final whistle had been blown but Portugal had a negative three (-3) goal difference and this would be the deciding factor in who gets to the last 16 as the final group stage games of the World Cup for Group G were played.
The first goal of the game would give Portugal the lead but it was not scored by a Portuguese player. Ghana defender John Boye gave Portugal their 1-0 lead when he turned a cross into his own net after 30 minutes.
Asamoah Gyan would not accept a cruel defeat at their own hands and would equalize with a header in the second half.
Ghana were playing well enough to get a 1-1 draw for a large part of the game but in the 80th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo would score the third and winning goal of the game.
KEY PLAYERS: Asamoah Gyan has now become an African who scored more World Cup goals than the great Roger Milla.
Cristiano Ronaldo got the winning goal of the game and has now scored in three consecutive World Cups.
