Reina back to Liverpool?
In spite of a fairly good season at Napoli, it seems that coach Rafael Benitez may not decide to call his once favored goalie Reina, back to his Stadio San Paolo. Reina’s agent Simone Bargellini revealed to ESPN that Napoli were unwilling to match Liverpool’s price demand of £4 million.
“It’s very difficult for Pepe to remain at Napoli; from June 30, he will return to Liverpool because they want to maximize his sale, and Napoli are not willing to spend what is required,” said Bargellini.
However, with Liverpool having moved on with Simon Mignolet who has impressed the Anfield loyals with his brilliant performance last season, it seems unlikely whether Reina will be back in the Liverpool dressing room. It’s also believed that the player is personally willing to stay in Italy as a first choice goalkeeper.
Reina has made 394 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Villareal in 2005. The player won 3 major trophies with Liverpool, including the memorable 2005-06 FA Cup, in which the stopper played a key role. Most recently the stopper played a crucial role in helping Napoli win the Coppa Italia, as well as helping them finish third in the Italian Seria A.
The player is currently with the Spanish National Team in Brazil for the World Cup. It is expected that Liverpool will ultimately want to sell the keeper rather than putting a competition between him and Mignolet. Last season, coach Brendon Rodgers was forced to look for a good alternative to Reina, who had expressed his willingness to leave Anfield and thus appointed Mignolet.
Meanwhile, there are rumors spreading that Liverpool are looking to sign a backup goalie to Mignolet, which might indeed hint towards the imminent exit of Reina from Anfield this season. Rumors indicate that Livepool have expressed interest in signing Swansea goalie Michel Vorm.
