WIJNALDUM JOINS THE REDS; MANNINGERS SIGNS AS WELL
Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, after agreeing a 5-year deal with Newcastle United estimated to be worth £25 million. After some brilliant performances last season the Dutch midfielder was on the radar of several major clubs, but the Dutch ultimately opted to sign for the Reds.
Since making his senior club debut with Feyenoord in the 2006-07 season, the Dutch has boasted an impressive scoring record of 92 goals and 39 assists in 326 appearances. He has also made 30 appearances for his country, scoring 6 goals.
“Liverpool is a club with a great history, but you want to get more history, create history, and be part of that,” said the Dutch to Liverpool’s official media after completing his deal. “That’s what I want, I came here to win something, and I’m going to do everything to make it happen.
Wijnaldum credited manager Jurgen Klopp for motivating him to join the Reds.
“I met him one time, we had a conversation and it was a good conversation because after I wanted to sign for Liverpool.”
“He convinced me to come to the club.”
Meanwhile, veteran Austrian goalie Alex Manninger has also joined Liverpool on a free transfer. In his distinguished international career the goalie featured for the likes of Arsenal, Juventus and Fiorentina. Manninger is expected to be joining in the Liverpool squad as the 3rd choice goalkeeper behind Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.
Wijnaldum will be wearing the number 5 shirt for the Reds while Manninger will be wearing the number 13 shirt.
